Ski & Sail Hjørundfjord

Hjørundfjord is arguably the most stunning fjord in all of Norway. Its sharp, pointy mountains shoot straight up from the sea to a a height of around 1400 metres. When the conditions are right, skiing these peaks directly down to the ocean is one of the most incredible experiences this country has to offer.

Join us for a week onboard one of our beautiful vessels from this part of the country, “Framstig” and “Wyvern av Aalesund”, exploring the small fjord villages and alpine peaks of this dramatic terrain in the Sunnmøre Alps.

We provide the best and fully certified UIAGM/IFMGA mountain guides.

Your safety is our top priority.

Where is it?

Hjørundfjord is situated on the very west coast of Norway. From the charming city of Aalesund, a vast fjord system called Storfjord begins. As one sails deeper, this separates into two fjords - Geirangerfjord & Hjørundfjord. Geirangerfjord is a landscape marvel in its own right, but the less famous Hjørundfjord is the real skiing destination of the two.

Arrival will be at Aalesund Vigra airport, from where we sail approximately 5 hours to reach the entrance of Hjørundfjord. The rest of the week is spent exploring the variety of skiing options here, before sailing back to Aalesund.

How does it work?

During the week, the vessel is both your home and your means of transport. At a few of the spots in Hjørundfjord, we may need additional car transport to reach our ski touring destinations, depending on the snow conditions.

Onboard the vessel you will have your own bed with storage for your personal belongings. Asides from other participants, there are mainly two people from Ski & Sail Norway you will have to relate to - the skipper and the mountain guide.

While onboard, it is the skipper’s responsibility to ensure your safety, but also your comfort. The skipper’s focus is on serving you the best experience of Hjørundfjord from a sea perspective, but also to make sure you are fed tasty, healthy meals after long days in the mountain.

In the mountain, it is the mountain guide you need to relate to. Our mountain guides are fully certified with long experience, and your safety is looked after by the best in the field. It is expected that you listen to and respect the mountain guide’s decision-making.

A week of ski touring may sound like a lot to many - and there is no doubt that it is a tough programme. You are of course free to have resting days onboard the vessel, where the skipper will take good care of you. The mountain guide will still plan for ski touring every day, with the exception of extreme weather conditions.

Alpine skiing involves considerable risk. Make sure you have read our terms and conditions thoroughly before considering a trip with us.
